Principal and staff profiles
Welcome from our Principal
Mrs Michelle Parkes, School Principal

Welcome to Pooraka Primary – a vibrant R-6 school located in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. Our close-knit community of approximately 180 students celebrates a rich diversity, reflecting the many cultures and languages of families from around the world. Pooraka Primary School is proud of its heritage, having first opened its doors on 14th April 1914 as the Abattoirs School. Since then, we have fostered strong connections with all areas of the community, including Unity Park, our local tennis club, kindergarten, and childcare centre.
At Pooraka Primary School, our approach places the wellbeing and growth of both staff and students at the centre of all we do. We pride ourselves on our ability to support small groups and individual students, ensuring every learner receives the wellbeing and academic support needed to thrive. Our extensive grounds feature nature play equipment and kitchen gardens, designed to inspire creative and critical thinking through play and problem solving.
Our vision is for students to be empowered to become effective, resilient, critical, and creative thinkers. We provide an environment that nurtures the development of skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary for students to solve problems and thrive in an ever-changing global landscape. We are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can reach their full potential and contribute positively to society.
We are proud to be aligned with the Department for Education’s Strategy for Public Education, which focuses on supporting every learner’s wellbeing and academic success in a safe and nurturing environment.
As Principal, it would be my absolute pleasure to share our school with prospective families and students. If you have any questions or would like to organise a tour, please feel free to contact me at any time.
I look forward to welcoming you to Pooraka Primary School.
